Raleighta Faye (Breeding) Spencer Tyler

December 1, 1918 — May 23, 2016

Raleighta Faye Breeding Spencer Tyler, 97, passed away on the evening of May 23, 2016 at Aberdeen Village, a Presbyterian Manor, in Olathe. She was born on December 1, 1918, near Home, Kansas, at the home of her parents Archie and Emma Zinn Breeding. She was named by her uncle, Dr. Walter Raleigh Breeding, who arrived late for the delivery. Dr. Breeding and his wife had no children of their own. Archie and Emma had agreed to use his name for their first son. With the arrival of their second daughter, he sat at the table and worked on versions of his name. Thus, Raleighta became his namesake. She was known to many friends as “Lee”. Raleighta started school at the age of 4 so that her older sister would not have to walk alone to the country school near Herkimer. She graduated from Marysville High School. She lived “in town” with her uncle, Dr. W. Raleigh Breeding during her high school days. She attended the 75th reunion of her high school class at Marysville, but declined to go to any more class reunions. She attended Kansas State University and was married to Dr. Ralph Norman Spencer. They were later divorced. Of this union were born two children, Dr. Jerry D. (Nila Jean) Spencer, Annapolis, Maryland and Patricia G. (Judge Gary) Rulon, Olathe. She married Robert M. Tyler in 1950. They lived on a farm near Olsburg. She began teaching elementary school in Olsburg and worked on completing her degree from Kansas State University by taking correspondence courses and attending evening and summer school classes. She graduated from Kansas State University in 1957. Over the years she taught elementary school in Olsburg, Fostoria, Marysville and Randolph. After retiring, she and Bob spent about twenty years wintering in Texas and Arizona. After his death in 1997, she moved to Emporia to live near her daughter. In 2003 she moved to Olathe and lived at Aberdeen Village. Survivors include her two children and their spouses, six grandchildren: Dr. Jessica (Dr. Todd) Dain, Elizabeth (Tom) Holland, all of Olathe; Commander Julie Spencer, Baltimore, Maryland; Amy (Keith) Pelster, Wentzville, MO.; Michael Spencer, Dallas, Texas, and Pamela (Laurent) Balague’, Vaires-sur-Marne, France. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren: Andie, Ashton, and Brock Dain; MacAllister, Harper, and Sawyer Holland; Amanda and Mark Pelster, and Elliott and Lucille Balague’. She is also survived by one brother, James (Gloria) Breeding, Marysville, Kansas; sister- in-law, Beverly (Loren) Breeding, Lakewood, Colorado; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Robert M. Tyler, siblings Lila Shafer, Raleigh Breeding, Ida Francis Scott, Loren Breeding and Howard Breeding. Services are planned at the Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville on Friday, June 10, 2016 at 11 am. Burial will follow at the Marysville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice, the Good Samaritan Fund at Aberdeen Village, or to the Elementary School Library of your choice.
