Leland "Red" Shepherd

Leland "Red" Shepherd, 84, died July 29, 2016 at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville. Visitation was Tuesday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 3 at the First Christian Church in Marysville. Rev. Andrew Lucas and Rev. Jerry Zanker officiated. The musicians were Deb Landoll and Scott Keller. Music included “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace”. The pallbearers were Jerry Rutti, Kevin Harmer, Ron Kjellberg, Steve Shepherd, Jenna Shepherd, Sean Spellmeier, Scott Spellmeier, and Mitchell Shepherd. The honorary pallbearers were Jake Moser, Galen Latta, Ed Taddiken, Don Harmer, Duane Ehnen, Ralph Plegge, Delmar Falen, and Darrell Whitebread. Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the American Legion SMNR Post 163, Marysville. Leland was born May 29, 1932 at Marysville, to John and Ethel (Dexter) Shepherd. In 1950, he graduated from Marysville High School. On Nov. 23, 1952, he married Velda Oehm at Wamego. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home, they purchased Shepherd’s Band Box Cleaners from his in-law’s, S.R. and Minnie Oehm and ran it for 35 years. He loved working with the public. Leland grew up and was an active member in the First Baptist Church. He served on the city council and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Shrine Band, and American Legion. He drove a bus for 44 years. He loved spending time with his family and following his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. He enjoyed camping, golfing, bowling and watching sports on television. He had a great smile and sense of humor. Leland was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, William Berry; wife, Velda in 2015; sister, Marjorie Rutti; and nephew, Don Rutti. Survivors include his son, John (Kelly) Shepherd, Topeka; daughter, Joni (Chris) Spellmeier, Marysville; brother, Dale (Peg) Shepherd, Ellsworth, KS; 4 grandchildren, Mitchell (Jill) Shepherd, Jenna Shepherd, Scott (Dani Osienger) Spellmeier, and Sean Spellmeier; step granddaughter, Amanda (Jesse) Whitehead; 2 great-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Laura Shortle, Topeka, Ruby (Don) Harmer, and Grace Saathoff, Marysville; brother-in-law, Ray (Marilyn) Oehm, Marysville; many nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
