Raymond J. Mlinar, 99, of Greeley passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at the Greeley Care Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at the Greeley Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Greeley Sacred Heart Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Charles E. Martin American Legion Post #186. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with a Rosary at 11:00 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the Greeley Care Home, Greeley Rescue Unit, Central Valley Schools or Donor’s Choice. T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Raymond John was born March 29, 1917, in Green Valley, southwest of Atkinson, Nebraska to John and Veronica (Horton) Mlinar. He attended Creston Grade School and graduated from Atkinson High School. Ray then attended college at Southern Normal in Springfield, SD, the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and Wayne State College receiving a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. From 1942-1945, he served in the United States Navy. On June 2, 1945, Ray was united in marriage to EmRose Cook at St. Francis de Sales Country Church in Madison County. The couple lived at Williamsburg, VA, Flandreau, SD, Battle Creek, Lyons, Weston, David City, Greeley, and Verdigre. Since 1973, they made their home in Greeley where Ray retired as Superintendent of Greeley Public School in 1982. Ray’s hobbies included playing cards, gardening, woodworking, fishing, dousing, and writing a column for the Greeley Citizen, entitled One Person’s Ideas. Ray took pride in his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and enjoyed gatherings with his family and friends and traveling. Survivors of the immediate family are his eight daughters and six sons, Patricia Callahan of Lincoln, Margaret “Peg” Slusarski and husband, Jerome “Jerry” of Columbus, Marilyn Janovec and husband, Bob of Niobrara, Rita Shaw and husband, Larry of Lincoln, Rosemary “Mony” Walstrom and husband, Cleve of Marysville, KS, Mary Voss and husband, Bill of Omaha, Jean Havermann and husband, Doug of Ogallala, Regina Paesl and husband, Ray of Verdigre, John and wife, Jane of Lincoln, Joseph “Joe” and wife, Dee of St. Paul, James “Jim” of Springfield, IL, Gerard “Jerry” and wife, Michele of Keystone, SD, Richard and wife, Leslie of Doniphan, and Robert of Ord; thirty-eight grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Kirby of Park Ville, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, EmRose in 2009; a sister, Genevieve Knight; brother-in-law, Clarence Knight; grandsons, Curtis and Derek Janovec; and a great-granddaughter, Abby Grace Mlinar.
