Catherine Utecht

Catherine Utecht, 91, Marysville, died November 25, 2017 at Athens, AL. Visitation will be Thursday, November 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 1, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery. Catherine was born on October 24, 1926 in Seneca, KS to Oscar and Anna (Volz) Hughes. She graduated from Bern High School in 1945. On September 6, 1948, Cathy was united in marriage to Marvin G. Utecht at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Cathy worked for Dr. Randall in Marysville from 1945 to 1966, then was a mail carrier with the US Postal Service at Lansing and Leavenworth, retiring in 1979. She was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, St. Gregory’s Altar Society, and Daughters of Isabella. Cathy was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary and served as 1st District President 1963-64. She was a Red Cross Volunteer for the blood mobile and the Marysville swimming program. Cathy belonged to AARP, National Association of Letter Carriers, 8 & 40, and NARFE. She volunteered 10,000 hours at the Veteran’s Hospital in Topeka. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Marvin in 2013; sister, Rita Wende; and brother, Don Hughes. Survivors include children, Robert Utecht, Elkmont, AL, Michael Utecht, Boise, ID, Patricia Weston, Littleton, CO; sisters, Helen Schwindamann, Marysville, Annie Baker, Sabetha; brother, Pat Hughes, Lee Summit, MO; and five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. A memorial fund is established, and contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary, Marysville.
