Barbara J. Campbell, 79, of Axtell, Kan., died January 15, 2018. Visitation was Thursday, January 18 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell. The family received friends 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 19 at the United Methodist Church in Axtell. Jose Eston Cruz and David Fairfield officiated. The pallbeabers were Nathan Jones, Jeremy Jones, McKenna Hulsing, Evan Fairfield, Kelsey Fairfield, Russ Fairfield, Michelle Miller, Andrea Pippia and Jessica Pippia. Private burial will be at a later date in Rosehill Cemetery, Axtell. Barb was born to Albert and Alice (Schmidt) Cain at Axtell on April 16, 1938. She attended St. Michael’s Grade School and graduated from Axtell High School in 1956. Barb helped in the family grocery store, worked at the local drug store and during her high school years was a relief telephone operator for the town’s phone company. On June 26, 1956, she married her high school sweetheart, Carl Campbell in Axtell. Their first home was in Clarksville, Ind. They became parents to four daughters, Cheryl, Cindy, Carla and Angie. They returned to live in Seneca, Kan., in 1961. Barbara was employed at various local businesses in Seneca, including Big B and Farm Bureau Insurance, as well as USD 442 and most recently ShopKo. Barbara and Carl purchased Steck Service in Axtell in 1969 and it became known as Carl’s 66 Service. The family moved to Axtell in 1971, where she remained until her death. Barb enjoyed quilting, reading, dancing and traveling. Her greatest joy was her family, treasuring time spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was lovingly known as Mamaw. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Carl; a granddaughter, Lindsey Garner; infant great granddaughter, Zora Rose; sister, Bertha Ford; and infant brother, Roland Cain. Surviving are daughters, Cheryl (Mel) Garner, Fairview, Cindy Jones, Axtell, Carla (David) Fairfield, Waukee, Iowa, and Angie (Mark) Pippia, Axtell; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; siblings, Kenneth Cain, Axtell, Galen Cain, Carbondale, Colo., Bernita Engelken, Stillwell, Kan., Ronald Cain, Overland Park, Kan., and Gary Cain, Port Hueneme, Calif. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home.
