Alice M. Smalley, 96, of Marysville, KS, died November 16, 2021, at Country Place Senior Living in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 19, at the Marysville United Methodist Church. Rev. Insung Kim officiated. Deb Landoll played the organ while Wayne Kruse sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Over the Rainbow”. The pallbearers were Todd Miller, Scott Miller, Ryan Smalley, Matt Newell, Kelly Marcotte and Sara Shehi. Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery. Alice was born June 6, 1925, in Reedsport, OR, a small town on the Oregon coast. She was the second of three girls born to James and Ethel (Beauchamp) Mohler. She graduated from Reedsport High School and then moved to Portland, where she became a secretary at a lumber brokerage firm. It was there that she met a sailor, Vaden E. Smalley and was married on June 30, 1946. After Vaden graduated optometry school in Chicago, IL, they moved to Marysville, where he established his optometry practice. Alice was a member of the Marysville Methodist Church, a member of Chapter BB, PEO for 45 years, two bridge clubs and volunteered at the public library for over twenty years. Alice played the clarinet, cello and loved to sing. She loved playing bridge and any kind of card games. Alice also sewed, knitted, crocheted and loved playing golf. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; and two sisters. Survivors include children, Ann (Jerry) Neufeld, Topeka, Carol (Earl) Newell, Powhattan, and Richard (Peggy) Smalley, Lawrence; six grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Alice’s family would like to thank the staff at Country Place Assisted Living, for the care and compassion she received during the last six years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Marysville Public Library or Country Place Senior Living. Kinsley Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
