Obituary

Allene W. Rhodes, 101, from Marysville, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, at Cambridge Place in Marysville.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 4th, 2026, at First Christian Church in Marysville. Pastor Adam Borgman officiated. Deb Bruna played the organ and Wayne Kruse was the soloist.

A visitation was held one hour before the funeral service.

Honorary Pallbearers were Jay Rhodes, Todd Rhodes, Maureen Rhodes Johnson and Sue Rhodes.

Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery.

Allene was born on February 6, 1925, at her childhood home in Marysville to Albert and Minnie (Miller) Kersten. She completed her education at Marysville High School, graduating in 1943. She married Charles Rhodes at her home in Marysville on August 25, 1946. Together, they raised three children: two sons, Jeff, and Craig; and a daughter, Julie.

Professionally, Allene dedicated many years as a Deputy Register of Deeds at the Marshall County Courthouse, a role she loved and performed with pride. Beyond her office duties, she shared her love for swimming as a Red Cross swim instructor, ensuring safety and skill for all under her watchful eye. She was also a member of Eastern Star and the Phi Omega Pi study club.

Family and tradition held a special place in Allene’s heart. She took great joy in hosting family holiday celebrations, carefully preserving traditions and recipes to pass down through generations. Her love for her children and grandchildren was evident in her support and attendance at their many activities.

Allene enjoyed cooking, skillfully recreating any recipe, and collecting new ones to try. She also delighted in watching television, especially historical dramas and documentaries. An interest in politics kept her informed and engaged; she was diligent about voting and encouraging others to vote as well. Her beautiful handwriting stands as a lasting mark, recorded in the books at the Register of Deeds office where she worked.

Allene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles, who passed away in 2005; and her son, Craig in 1989.

She is survived by her children Jeff (Mara Lou) Rhodes of Wichita, and Julie (Brian) Gordon of Marysville. Also surviving are her sister, Margaret Eddy of Topeka, along with four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund has been established to the Historic Marshall County Courthouse restoration project. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
