Bessie "Bess" B. Shum, 92, of Home, KS passed away December 23, 2020 at her home. Public visitation will be Saturday, January 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Marysville. A private funeral service will be held following the visitation at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical United Church of Christ. The service will be streamed live on the Kinsley Mortuary Facebook page. Masks will be required for all services. Burial will be in the Washington City Cemetery in Washington, KS. Bessie was born June 10, 1928 in Washington to William Pearl and Rhoda Lucinda (Henderson) Holbrook. In 1945, she graduated from Washington High School and earned her degree from Emporia Teachers College. Bess taught in Bondville, a one room country school in Washington, County before her marriage. On August 14, 1949, Bess was united in marriage to Charles “Elvin” Shum in Washington. They moved from Washington to Home, KS and then to a farm outside of Marysville. Eventually moving back to Home in 1974. Bess worked as a bookkeeper for the Home City Grain Elevator, substituted for the Marysville School District and was a substitute rural mail carrier. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Marysville, was a founding member of the Lucky Mrs Extension, belonged to RSVP, volunteered with Habitat, was a former 4-H leader and taught swimming lessons for years. Bess belonged to several card clubs, was an American Red Cross volunteer and belonged to the Blue Valley Saddle Club. Family was especially important to her and she loved family reunions and gatherings. She enjoyed attending all events that her family participated in, playing cards, reading, fishing, puzzles and was an avid sports fan. Honorary Pallbearers are her grandchildren: Joe Shum, Shawnee, KS; Jim Shum, Home, KS; Katy Smith, Frankfort, KS; Brian Shum, Chugiak, AK; Laura Shum, Boston, Conn; Karmen Genrich, Leawood, KS; Justin Shum, Denver, CO; Sean Southerland, Wichita, KS; Kayne Shum, Andover, KS; Stephanie McCormack, El Dorado, KS; Adam Teske, Louisiana; Audra Zimmerman, Towanda, Chas Maloney, Kansas City; Gavin Maloney, Wichita, KS; Shane Maloney, Duluth, Minn Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Elvin; sons, Steve Shum and William Shum; brothers, John Holbrook, David Holbrook; and sister, Mary Roop. Survivors include sons, John (JoAnn) Shum, Home, Larry (Kathy) Shum, Marysville, Keith (Becky) Shum, El Dorado; daughters, Cindy (Tom) Graham, St. Marys, Marie (Rob) Maloney, Wichita; daughter-in-law, Donna Shum, Stafford, NY; sister-in-law, Marcella Holbrook-Stewart, Washington; fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and one one the way; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial fund is established and contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary, Marysville.
