Betty was born on April 10, 1928, to Samuel and Edith (Jones) O’Neal on a farm southeast of Frankfort. As the eldest of seven children, she began her education at a country school at the age of five. Betty graduated from Frankfort High School in 1945 and soon after began working for Glynn’s Grocery and then Southwestern Bell Telephone in Marysville. On June 7, 1947, she married LeMoyne (Hank) Sisk in Vliets, KS. The couple initially lived on a farm south of Vliets before moving to Frankfort in 1951. Betty continued her work with Southwestern Bell in Frankfort after their marriage, until the office closed in 1955.
Betty and Hank were the proud parents of three daughters: Kathryn, who passed away in infancy, Pamela, and Jill. To remain at home with her children, Betty began selling Avon, a role she dedicated herself to for 21 years. She also kept books for Rube’s Diner and T&S Oil Company in Frankfort and served as a full-time school bus driver from 1980 to 1984, later working as a substitute driver for 11 years. In 1982, she became the manager of Little Timber Housing and later worked part-time at the Nutrition Center. Betty’s dedication to her community extended to her church, where she served as the treasurer of the United Methodist Church for 40 years and as a substitute church secretary from 1993 until 2010, when she became the full-time secretary until her retirement in 2015. A member of the church for over 70 years, Betty contributed in numerous ways, from teaching Sunday School to assisting with the Chuck Wagon Supper, Rotary and funeral meals, the Fall Festival and Soup Day, and as a member of Seekers Circle. Her community service was further evidenced by her 66-year membership in the American Legion Auxiliary, a 55-year membership in Chapter EJ PEO, and volunteering as a driver for the Frankfort Ambulance Service.
She had a love for working in her yard, gardening and flowers, and her family and friends always looked forward to her cinnamon rolls and English toffee.
Betty and Hank were blessed with 74 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on August 12, 2021. She was also preceded in death by her infant daughter, Kathryn; parents; brothers, Bob, David, and William; sister, Gloria Finn; and great-grandson, Jase Suther.
She is survived by her daughters, Pam (Jerry) Suther of Frankfort, and Jill (Joseph) Harrison II of Wesley Chapel, FL; sisters, Patty O’Neal of Sun City West, AZ, and Carol Worley of Clay Center, KS; grandchildren, Shane (Angie) Suther of Pembine, WI, Matt (Cherie) Suther of Lenexa, KS, Ashley (Craig) Schubert of Overland Park, KS, Tianta Harrison of Grand Prairie, TX, and Joseph (Michelle) Harrison III of South Orange, NJ; and 13 great-grandchildren.
