Burial followed in the Home City Cemetery, Home, Kansas.

She was born on May 22, 1935, at Home, KS to Theodore and Irene (Dettke) Rippe. She was baptized on August 4, 1935 by Rev. Henry Knaub at Friedens Lutheran Church in Home. She was confirmed by Rev. H.L. Lenser at Friedens Lutheran Church.

Darlene grew up on a farm near Home City where her grandparents Robert and Augusta (Przynosch) Dettke had settled. After their passing, Darlene’s parents purchased the farm in 1937, where Darlene lived until she married. She attended 8 grades in a one room school called District 127 Crane School. On May 19, 1953, she graduated from Marysville High School.

During her senior year she worked in the school office one hour a day and went to each classroom picking up the attendance slips. On Saturday mornings, she worked at Charles McLeod’s office in Marysville. Then after graduation she went to work for Marysville Mutual Insurance Company. In her later years she worked at Kenneth Moses’ law office, the SRS office, again at Marysville Mutual and for optometrist Dr. D.L. Ackerman until she retired.

On April 17, 1955, Darlene was united in marriage to Norman Wayne Lohse at Friedens Lutheran Church by Rev. Theo Kauffeld in Home City. For a few months they lived at Killen, TX where Norman was in the Army at Ft. Hood. After he was discharged, they returned to Marysville and were blessed with a daughter, Lori Ann and a son, David Wayne. They bought the old Mt. Calvary Church. Norman tore down and used the lumber to build their first and only home.

Darlene was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school every Sunday for fifty Sundays a year for twelve years. She also taught vacation bible school, where she enjoyed teaching them the Bible stories. Darlene loved being with her family and having family gatherings. She made many photo books for herself and children and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed attending the children’s and grandchildren’s games and activities. Family was very important to her. Her favorite saying was “You must have God, family, and a sense of humor.”

She did crafts, sewing, reading cooking, puzzles, playing cards with friends and getting together with the 1953 Class Lunch Bunch and Ladies Bible Class.

Norman and Darlene were very proud when they won a new 1952 Chevy car at the Hanover Carnival Days of 49.

Traveling was a highlight in her life. She traveled to Niagara Falls, Washington D.C., New York, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Branson and many of the states.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Norman in 2024; sister, Evelyn Scripter; and in-laws, Verna Saathoff and Melvin and Donna Lohse, and Anita Lohse.
