Herschel F. Mentgen, age 98, of Frankfort, KS, passed away on August 26, 2026, at the Frankfort Community Care Home.

A visitation was held on Friday, August 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Padden Funeral Chapel.

A rosary took place at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, August 29, at Annunciation Catholic Church in Frankfort. The funeral service followed immediately after at 10 a.m.. Father Jim Shaughnessy officiated. The organist was Marilyn Dressman, and the cantor was Bill Gallagher. Hymns included “Be Not Afraid”, “Bless the Lord, Oh My Soul”, “Prayer of St. Francis”, “Taste and See”, and “Sing with All the Saints in Glory.”

The pallbearers were Doug Plegge, Chet Fincham, Barry Jones, Paul Studer, Eric Gerstner, Lance Jones, Austin Cline, Steve Keating, and Kent Floyd.

Burial followed in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Herschel was born on July 30, 1928, in Marysville, KS, to Matthew and Irene (Fields) Mentgen.

He attended school in Frankfort, and graduated from Frankfort High School.

On June 20, 1949, Herschel was united in marriage to Edith Fincham. Together, they were blessed with a daughter, Christine.

Herschel worked for the Marshall County Road and Bridge Department, serving as a supervisor until his retirement. Alongside his work with the county, he and Edith farmed and raised cattle together for many years.

Preceding him in death are his parents; and brother, Donald Mentgen.

Survivors include his wife, Edith; daughter, Christine (James) Wilde, San Angelo, TX; two grandchildren, Meridith (Colton) Harris, Granger, TX, and Ashley (Andrew) Pirtle, Lubbock, TX; three great-grandchildren, Weston, Avery, and Charlotte, all of Granger, TX; brother, Gerald Mentgen; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Frankfort Community Care Home for the excellent care and compassion shown to Herschel, along with Meadowlark Hospice. They are also deeply grateful to Herschel and Edith’s neighbors, who continually looked out for them and offered their support while they were still living at home.
