Janice R. Tjaden, daughter of Virgil and Ruth Nickeson, was born August 2, 1940, in Beatrice, Nebraska. She graduated in 1958 from Filley High School and grew up on a farm near Filley, Nebraska. Her loves were her family, especially her grandchildren, gardening, sewing, and her cats and dogs. She died peacefully on April 29, 2026, at Cambridge Place in Marysville, Kansas.
Visitation will be from 1:00–8:00 p.m., Friday, May 1, 2026, at Kinsley Mortuary.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 2, at Immanuel Stateline Lutheran Church, north of Marysville. The service will be livestreamed on the Kinsley Mortuary Facebook page, and burial will be in the church cemetery.
On April 29, 1962, Janice was united in marriage to Delmar Tjaden at the Wymore Methodist Church in Wymore, Nebraska, and they were blessed with 59 years of marriage. Through their love, they had five children: Rebecca Tjaden (deceased), Debra (Tjaden) Harris (deceased), Brian Tjaden of Marysville, Patricia (Tjaden) Chandler of Bonner Springs, and Ryan Tjaden of Marysville. Delmar and Janice were active members of Stateline Lutheran Church, and Janice enjoyed tying quilts with the ladies. She enjoyed square dancing, helping with the farm, canning produce from her garden, playing cards with the neighbors, and attending events for her children and grandchildren. Her smile would light up the room.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delmar; brother, Keith Nickeson; sister-in-law, Anita Nickeson; nephew, Grant Searcey; brother-in-law, Vern Tjaden; sister-in-law, Leona Tjaden; brother-in-law, William Ewald; daughters, Rebecca Tjaden and Debra (Tjaden) Harris; and great-grandsons, Everett Tjaden and Kolter Tjaden.
Survivors include her children, Brian (Teri) Tjaden, Patricia (Matthew) Chandler, and Ryan (Jamie) Tjaden; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established for Meadowlark Hospice Care and Immanuel Stateline Lutheran Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
