John A. Runnebaum

John A. Runnebaum, 67, of Marysville, KS, died December 18, 2021, at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 23, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Father Quentin Schmitz will officiate. Please make sure to wear your favorite MHS Bulldog attire to the funeral. The pallbearers are David Runnebaum, Jeff Ballman, Brad Runnebaum, Cody Pacha, Ryan Latta, Raudy Latta, Bernie Runnebaum, Jr., Lee Wetter, Michael Runnebaum, Andy Runnebaum, Jacob Latta and Dustin O’Neil. Burial will be in the Marysville City Cemetery. John was born December 25, 1953, to Bernard and Mary Louise (Lake) Runnebaum. He attended Beattie Elementary and graduated from Marysville High School in 1971. John joined the U.S. Army and served in West Berlin, Germany. On September 4, 1976, he married Amy Latta at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell. They were blessed with two children, John and Jessie. After his time in the Army, John worked for his father’s dairy farm and later bought and ran it for five years. He then worked for Firestone and Dixon Tire in Marysville. In 1989 he took a job in maintenance at MHS and would retire in 2019 as the Maintenance and Grounds Supervisor for the school. After retiring he worked for the City of Marysville, Parks and Recreation, helped Bob Voet with farming, mowed yards during the summer and removing snow during the winter months for various people. John enjoyed hunting and fishing, mowing, playing cards, especially Canasta, visiting the casino, giving his grandchildren rides on the mower, watching his children and grandchildren play sports and coaching his own children and many others in baseball and softball. He also loved spending all 9 months of the school year interacting with all students and staff of USD 364. John took great pride in knowing that his grandchildren would someday walk in the halls of the upgraded schools and play sports in the gym he helped establish. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene and Jim; infant siblings, Paul Gerard and Ronnie Lee; nephew, Jerry Runnebaum; sister-in-law, Deb; father-in-law, Galen Latta; and brother-in-law, Tony Schmale. Survivors include his wife, Amy, Marysville; son, John (Tanya), Topeka; grandchildren Ava, Jax, Braiden and Brenner, daughter, Jessie (Blake) Gurtler, Beattie; grandchildren Kylie, Faye, Blaire and Cole; siblings, Bernie (Cathie) Runnebaum, Ralph (Judy) Runnebaum, Larry (Geri) Runnebaum, Judy (Bob) Ballman, Lori Runnebaum, Lynn (Kim) Runnebaum, Lou (Jim) Wassenberg, Janet Runnebaum, Joan (Shane) Hartner, Mark Runnebaum and Greg (Linda) Runnebaum; mother-in-law, Thelma Latta, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Stacey) Latta, Rodney (Susie) Latta, Randy Latta, Mary Schmale; and many nieces, nephews and also great nieces and great nephews. A memorial fund has been established for the MHS Booster Club. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
