Joe was born on March 19, 1953, in Axtell, KS, to Raymond and Eileen (Kramer) Hasenkamp. He attended St. Michael’s Catholic School and graduated from Axtell Public School in May 1971. Shortly after graduation, Joe joined the Kansas Army National Guard, serving from 1971 until 1976.
On February 3, 1973, Joe was united in marriage to Marian Schmitz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. Together, they were blessed with two sons, Jesse and Rodney.
Joe worked for Meyer Lumberyard in Axtell before he and Marian purchased a farm near Burchard, Nebraska, in 1975. While living there, he also worked for Jack Hoffman Construction. In 1980, they sold the farm and returned to Axtell, where they purchased a farm north of town and made their home for over 40 years. In 2019, they moved into Axtell.
Joe enjoyed life on the farm and took great pride in raising cattle. While farming, he also began driving a truck part time for the local grain elevator and making over-the-road product deliveries. In 1990, Joe purchased his own semi and began driving full time. He continued as an owner-operator until selling his truck in 2005. Afterward, he continued driving locally on a part-time basis until 2010.
He was happiest when he was on the farm, behind the wheel of a truck, or surrounded by his family. Joe especially enjoyed having his grandchildren around and the time they spent together.
Joe enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially coon, deer, and bird hunting. More than anything, he enjoyed a good time, sharing stories and laughs with family and friends.
He was a member of the St. Michael’s Parish, Axtell American Legion, and the Axtell Knights of Columbus.
Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers, Bruce, Jim, and Steve; father-in-law, Virgil Schmitz; and brother-in-law, John Schmitz.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; sons, Jesse (Stacy) Hasenkamp, and Rodney (Rhonda) Hasenkamp, both of Axtell; six grandchildren, Emma, Alyssa, Dallas, Riley, Regan, and Ryder Hasenkamp, all of Axtell; brother, Larry (Diane) Hasenkamp of Axtell; mother-in-law, Verita Schmitz; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Patty Hasenkamp of Seneca, Linus (Sue) Schmitz of Edmund, Oklahoma, Lisa Schmitz of Centralia, Kansas, Jane (Dan) Strohmeyer of Manhattan, Kansas, Doris (Howard) Holthaus, Olathe, Kansas, Eileen (Randy) Scott, Los Altos, California, Caroline (Tim) McClure of Auburn, Nebraska, Elmer (Laura) Schmitz of Amarillo, Texas, Sandra (Dennis) Samskey of Olathe, Kansas, and Nancy (Randy) Vogel of Clearwater, Kansas.
A memorial fund has been established for the Axtell American Legion. Contributions may be sent in care of Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home, c/o Kinsley Mortuary, P.O. Box 147, Marysville, KS 66508.
