Lanny E. Carpenter

Lanny E. Carpenter, 82, of Marysville, Kansas, passed away on June 17, 2026, at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., July 18, at the Marysville Methodist Church.

Lanny was born on January 5, 1944, in Seneca, Kansas, to Kenneth and Charlotte (Schneider) Carpenter. He grew up near Sabetha and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1962.

Following high school, Lanny attended Emporia State University before transferring to Kansas State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. On August 18, 1970, he married Dulcie E. Chubbs at L’Anse Au Clair, Canada, beginning a loving partnership that spanned more than five decades.

Lanny devoted his life to education and to the students whose lives he touched. He began his teaching career at Marysville High School, where he taught French and Spanish. After a brief time teaching in Holton, Kansas, he returned to Emporia State University and earned a master’s degree in counseling. In 1978, he returned to Marysville High School as guidance counselor, a position he held until his retirement in 2014 at the age of 70.

For generations of Marysville students, Lanny was far more than a counselor. He was a trusted mentor, a friendly face in the hallway, and a steady source of encouragement. He genuinely cared about every student who walked through his door and had a remarkable gift for remembering them by name, even years after graduation. Whether offering advice, celebrating achievements, or helping students navigate difficult decisions, Lanny made each person feel valued and important. His kindness, patience, and interest in others left a lasting impression on countless lives.

Even after retirement, Lanny continued to support education and the community he loved by serving on the Marysville School Board. His commitment to students never ended.

Lanny was a member of the Marysville Methodist Church and the National Education Association. He enjoyed singing in the church choir, volunteering wherever help was needed, and assisting with the Marshall County Christmas Program. He and Dulcie also shared a love of travel and enjoyed exploring new places together.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Monte and Donna Carpenter, and brother-in-law, Tom Krueger.

Survivors include his wife, Dulcie Carpenter of Marysville; two sons, Shawn Carpenter (Rachelle) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Ryan Carpenter (Jenny) of Overland Park, Kansas; two grandsons, Cale and Cade Carpenter; brothers, Dan Carpenter (Kaye) of Mission Hills, Kansas, and Mark Carpenter (Kathy) of Sabetha, Kansas; and sister, Nancy Flentie of Sabetha, Kansas.

Lanny's legacy lives on in the thousands of students he encouraged, guided, and inspired throughout his career. He will be remembered for his warm smile, caring heart, and the genuine interest he took in every person he met.
