Melvin J. Sedlacek, 101, of Marysville, KS, passed away September 20, 2025, at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, KS.
Family and friends signed the register book and viewed on Sunday, September 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service followed at 7 p.m. at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville.
A Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 29, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, with Father Quentin Schmitz officiating. Burial followed in St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Doug Roudybush, Travis Roudybush, Bob Scheller, A.J. Perine, Ben Novotny, Jay Novotny, Aaron Bingham, and Adam Bingham.
Melvin was born August 19, 1924, near Hanover, KS, the son of John A. and Rose M. (Fruh) Sedlacek. He attended St. John’s Catholic School in Hanover through the 8th grade.
As a young man, he worked on Sylvester Bruna’s farm before joining Firestone in Marysville. He became store manager in 1971 and retired in 1981.
Melvin loved both working and farming. He enjoyed bowling, puzzles, dominoes, woodworking, and keeping busy with odd jobs, such as mowing lawns and trimming trees. Known for his sense of humor, he liked to pull a good prank now and then.
He married Margaret Wassenberg on October 12, 1943, and later divorced. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Mildred Brown, Loretta Henshaw, Dolores Clark, Josephine Brown, twin brother Alvin Sedlacek, and Louis Sedlacek.
Survivors include his children: Mary Ann (Carl) Dixon of Blue Rapids, KS; Betty (Jim) Scheller of Salina, KS; Peggy (Mike) Perine of Topeka, KS; Cyndi Novotny of Beatrice, NE; and Regina (Robert) Nixon of Manhattan, KS; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Koehler of Hanover; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Norma Mitschler of Marysville.
A memorial fund has been established for St. Gregory’s Catholic Church or Country Living in Marysville. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary, P.O. Box 147, Marysville, KS 66508.
