Phyllis Ann Mathewson, 88, of Axtell, KS, died April 24, 2022, at Oakley Place in Seneca, KS. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Axtell. Father Jim Shaughnessy will officiate. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 28, at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Father Reginald Saldanha will officiate. Kathy Buessing will be the organist. Music will include "On Eagles Wings", "Parable", "10,000 Reasons", "Irish Blessing" and "How Great Thou Art". The pallbearers will be Matthew Sears, Brian Sears, Dan Mathewson, Ryan Mathewson, Christopher Rottinghaus, Dustin Rottinghaus, John Mathewson, and Winsten Mathewson. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery. Phyllis was born September 24, 1933, to Stephen and Margaret (Mitchell) Glynn, on the family farm near Axtell. She attended a one room school approximately two miles from home. In 1950, she graduated from Seneca High School at the age of 16. She worked at the Luce Grocery and Mercantile in Axtell. On February 13, 1956, she was united in marriage to Raymond Mathewson at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church. Phyllis was a homemaker and farmwife. She was a great cook and gardener. Quilting, embroidering and handiwork were some of her favorite pastimes. She was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic church, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, and St. Michael’s Guild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; son, James Mathewson; brother, Gerald Glynn; and sister, Patricia Kramer. Survivors include her children, Elaine (Ted) Sears, Salina, KS, Robert (Lisa) Mathewson, Axtell, Donald Mathewson, Summerfield, KS, Jane (Tim) Rottinghaus, Baileyville, KS, and Michael (Lisa) Mathewson, Summerfield; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Mathewson, Axtell; sister, Gladys Koch, Seneca; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established to the Axtell American Legion. Contributions may be sent in care of the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home.
