Richard (Dick) O'Neil

Richard (Dick) Wayne O’Neil, 68, Manhattan, died at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, after fighting a short battle with brain cancer. Richard was born on June 22, 1950 in Axtell, KS and grew up in Beattie, KS. He graduated in 1968 from Marysville High School. Richard attended Hutchinson Community College to play football and then moved to Manhattan, KS in 1969 where he resided until his death. He is survived by his five children, David (and Mary) O’Neil, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Wes (and Kaisha) O’Neil, Olathe, KS, Erin O’Neil, Manhattan, KS, Kelli O’Neil, Manhattan, KS, and Lydia (and Bryce) Huninghake, Manhattan, KS; his siblings, Patty (and Joe) Germer, Marysville, KS, Ron (and Laura) O’Neil, Beattie, KS, Deb O’Neil, Topeka, KS, and Jane (and JP) Kuchera, Wamego, KS; and ten grandchildren, Rhiannon, Logan, and Molly O’Neil, Greyson, Hunter, and Colter O’Neil, Moses McFadden, and Retley, Ellie, and Perry Huninghake. He is proceeded in death by his parents, James and Lilly (Butler) O’Neil; siblings, Michael O’Neil, and Sharon (O’Neil) McCullough; and stepfather, Lawrence Graham. Richard worked at Rex’s Tire prior to working at Standard Plumbing, where he worked until he retired in 2016. Richard loved K-State sports, especially football and going to the Big 12 basketball tournament. His love of sports only continued when he coached many years of fastpitch softball. Richard often hiked in Colorado and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and bird watching. After his retirement, he took full advantage of spending time with his five kids and most importantly, his ten grandchildren, who will miss him dearly. A Vigil Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday May 19, 2019 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. The family will greet friends following the Vigil on Sunday until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 20, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, with Father Kerry Ninemire and Father Gale Hammerschmidt as Celebrants.  Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Patrick’s/ St. Malachy’s Cemetery in Beattie, with Father Nathan Haverkamp officiating. The Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.
