Richard was born November 25, 1939, at the family’s home south of Barnes, Kansas, to Lawrence “Jim” and Paula (Dierking) Wiechman. He was baptized on December 3, 1939, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church south of Barnes and was later confirmed there on March 29, 1953.

He attended Ober School south of Barnes through the eighth grade before graduating from Barnes High School in 1957.

On July 23, 1961, Richard was united in marriage to LaVonne Stohs at Immanuel (Hermansberg) Lutheran Church.  This year they would have celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Following high school, Richard worked at the Barnes elevator for five years before pursuing a career in the insurance industry. He began working for The Mill Mutuals Insurance, which later became Grain Dealers Insurance, specializing in coverage for grain elevators and feedlots. His work took the family to several communities, including Barnes, Lincoln, Nebraska, Wichita, Kansas, Hebron, Nebraska, Shawnee, Kansas, and Papillion, Nebraska. During the final ten years of his 35-year career, he served as president of the company. After retiring from Grain Dealers Insurance in 2003, he and LaVonne moved to Marysville. Richard then worked as a crop adjuster for another 17 years.

Richard was active in both his church and community. He was a past member of the Lions Club and faithfully served his church in many roles, including usher, treasurer, Finance Board member, and elder. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and visited 49 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, China, and the Holy Land. Many of those travels also centered around attending the events and activities of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, LaVonne; four children, Margaret (Jeffrey) Ficken of Lincoln, Nebraska, Marilyn Bohaty of Seward, Nebraska, Michael (Donelle) Wiechman of Enid, Oklahoma, and Miriam (Darren) Weber of Crete, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren and their families: Kiley Ficken (Allen Greaves) and children, Cambry, Vaeda, Zeppelin, and Ellis; Bryce Ficken (Ashley) and children, Crew, Dylan, and Elle; Haley Averill (Logan) and child, Thatcher; Emily Bohaty-Patrick (Tyler); Eric Bohaty; Andrew Wiechman (Dari) and children, Carter and Colson; Kelly Bailey (CJ); Grant DeWitt (Victoria) and children, Easton, Tyson, and Cooper; Cole DeWitt (Halie) and child, Chanie; Doug DeAlmeida (Haley) and children, Nolan and Adriane; Alexandra Weber; Austin Weber (Megan); and Samantha Weber; brother, Donald (Marcy) Wiechman of Longmont, Colorado; and sister, Arlene Vorce of Davenport, Nebraska.
