A funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday December 20, 2022, at Padden Funeral Chapel in Frankfort. Rev. Jeremy Henderson officiated. Pallbearers were Charles Johnson, Bill Neilson, Don O’Dell, Larry Barber, Brad Connell and Howard Weston. Burial was held at a later date. Richard was born March 29, 1948 in Seneca, KS to Lyle and Elanore (Swanson) Johnson. In 1966, he graduated from Axtell High School and in 1970, he graduated from K-State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture. Richard was a very sincere Christian. He was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church serving on the church board for several years and held several positions within the church, including leading a men’s Bible study group. He loved gardening, raising plants, and sharing apples from his trees with his neighbors and friends. When he moved to town, he had several flower beds blooming throughout the season. Richard was a farmer and professional painter. He retired as a painter from K-State. Richard took great pride in everything he did, including his painting and woodworking; creating intricate items and furniture for his family. Rick loved spending holidays and birthdays with his family. For a number of years, he was the one who made potato sausage to share. He was very involved in the lives of his nieces and nephews, always making a fuss over them. He was called the “Candy Man” by the kids at church because he always had his pockets full of Smarties to give to them. He enjoyed fishing with his buddies, then having a fish fry for the community. They did this for several years. On July 6, 2009, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Barber in St. Joseph, MO. She survives. He is also survived by children, Larry Barber, Melissa Armstrong, and Sarah Barber of St. Joseph; siblings, Janet (Bill) Neilson, Leonardville, Charles (Sandy) Johnson, Manhattan, Joan (Don) O’Dell, Topeka; and four grandchildren, Destiny Lawrence, Skylar Lawrence, Madeline Connell and Neva Connell and two great grandchildren, Matias Walters and Braxtyn Walters; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents. A memorial fund has been established to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Heart Association and/or the Frankfort Community Care Home. Contributions may be sent in care of Padden Funeral Chapel. Funeral for Richard Johnson To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Richard A.
