Shirley M. Spangler, 88, of Axtell, KS, died June 8, 2023, at Frankfort Community Care Home. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., July 1, at Mission Covenant Church, southwest of Axtell. Rev. Herb Schrader officiated. Pianist was Carissa Shirley. The congregation sang "In The Garden" and Seth Bishop sang "The Old Rugged Cross." Honorary pallbearers were David Broxterman, Jordan Broxterman, Caleb Broxterman, Jacob Broxterman, Mariah Broxterman, Christa Warner, Grace Warner and Avery McCune. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Axtell. Shirley was born on July 1, 1934 in Axtell to Ralph and Edith (Temple) Temple. She attended school in Axtell and graduated from Axtell High School. On August 15, 1958, she was united in marriage to Eddie Spangler in Denver, CO. This union was blessed with three daughters, Lisa, Laura and Linette. Shirley was a bookkeeper for Rural Electric Cooperative in Axtell and worked previously for various banks in Topeka and Denver. She was a long-time member of the Mission Covenant Church, where she served as a deaconess and church reporter. Her faith was important to her and she participated in several community Bible studies. Shirley was a devout Christian. Her home was the center of every holiday and family gathering. Peppernuts (a secret family recipe) on Christmas Eve was a family tradition. At the church potlucks, her cakes and brownies were favorite desserts. Shirley raised huge gardens that provided the family food all year long. Along with Eddie, she planted several acres of sweet corn to freeze and share with friends and family. She also raised chickens and shared the eggs with family and friends. Reading, gardening, genealogy, and attending her grandchildren’s sports and activities were favorite pastimes. She never missed a family event. Her family was very important to her. Shirley was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Eddie; and brother, James Temple. Survivors include daughters, Lisa (Terry) Broxterman, Axtell, Laura (Mark) Warner, Manhattan, and Linette (Marc) McCune, Ozawkie; grandchildren, David (Meghan) Broxterman, Jordan (Drew) Broxterman, Caleb (Rebecca) Broxterman, Jacob (Ashley) Broxterman, Mariah Broxterman, Christa Warner, Grace Warner and Avery McCune; and great grandchildren, Calvin Broxterman, Eddie Broxterman, Emmett Broxterman, Perry Broxterman and Sullivan Broxterman. A memorial fund has been designated to Frankfort Community Care Home. Contributions may be sent in care of Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home.
