Tony Stoehr

October 13, 1935 — August 27, 2022

Tony Stoehr, 86, of Marysville, KS, died August 27, 2022 at his home. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m., Thursday, September 1 at Kinsley Mortuary. A rosary service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 2, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville, with a funeral service following at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery. Lawrence Anthony (Tony) Stoehr was born October 13, 1935 in Herkimer to Lawrence Herman and Mary Elizabeth (Schwartz) Stoehr. Tony attended grade school in Herkimer and graduated Marysville High School in 1953. Tony was united in marriage to Esther Eileen Frey on June 18, 1969. She was from Ohio and they met in Colorado Springs, CO, where she worked as a registered nurse. They lived in Herkimer. Esther died on October 8, 1991. They were great friends with Margaret and Freddie Nieberding and were God parents to their son, John Henry. Tony married Margaret Marie Riess Nieberding on January 2, 1993 and she preceded him in death on January 3, 2021. Tony was active in the Army and National Guard. He farmed north of Herkimer with his father and Uncle Bud. Tony was a regular at the Herkimer Coop and loved to trade stories with the guys. He was a volunteer fireman from 1960 until 2007, serving as fire chief from 1964 until he retired. Everyone who worked with him said he was excellent to work with. Tony built the first firetruck for the Herkimer Fire Department – a jeep with a trailer. As well as his farming, the Army and being fire chief, he ran a successful repair shop north of Herkimer, there was nothing he couldn’t do. He leaves behind family, friends and acquaintances bereft of his wonderful stories, hilarious sense of humor, infectious laugh and genuine love of life. He was a kind and generous man with his time, knowledge and caring. The world will be a poorer place without him and everyone will miss him answering his phone with, “This is Antone.” Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Esther; second wife, Margaret; and his God son, John Henry Nieberding. Survivors include his cousin, Mary Lou Marquardt; three step children, Mary Ann (Jim) Seslar, Gallup, NM, Fred (Terri) Nieberding, Marysville, Regina (Tim) Fisher, Lafayette, CO; six grandchildren, Jonathan (Cessalie) Nieberding, Isaac Seslar, Jake Troyer, Madison Nieberding, Gus Fisher and Laura (Jim) Conley; two great grandchildren, Kennedy Nieberding and Brooks Conley; and God children, Tony Marquardt, Chuck Marquardt, Margaret Marquardt Smith, Patty Marquardt Walker, Raymond Marquardt, Susan Craig, Diane Stryker and Mike Seematter; and nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
