Verla Mae Rettig, 85, of Hanover, KS, died Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at the Centennial Homestead Nursing Home. Visitation was held Sunday, August 23 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Hanover Mortuary. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Monday, August 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church near Hanover. Rev. Rodney Fritz officiated. Arlyce Klipp was the organist. Music included “Abide with Me”, “Asleep in Jesus”, “I Am But a Stranger Here”, “Go My Children, With My Blessing”. The pallbearers were Marty Coufal, Jon Rettig, James Oehm, Raleigh Ordoyne, Brian Rettig and Dan Scheele. Burial was in the church cemetery. Verla was born October 14, 1934 on the family farm NE of Hanover to Ernest and Hermine (Niemann) Kruse. She was baptized October 21, 1934 by Rev. William Mahler and confirmed April 10, 1949 by Rev. Theo Kauffield. Verla attended Trinity Lutheran School. On October 19, 1952, she was united in marriage to Willard Rettig at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hanover. To this union four children were born, Dorothy, Floyd, Kenneth and Karen. Verla was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, member of the Trinity Ladies Aid and sang in the choir. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 306 in Hanover. Verla worked in the laundry department of the Hanover Hospital for twenty-seven years and was a treasurer of the Kloppenberg Board. She liked to knit, embroider and loved to bake. Her family was especially fond of her cinnamon rolls. She would also do the canning from the garden produce. Verla was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Willard in 2013; daughter, Dorothy Stigge; brother, Darwayne Kruse; and brother-in-law, Orville Scheele. Survivors include children, Floyd (Linda) Rettig, Hanover, Kenneth (Dotty) Rettig, Linn, Karen Doerr, New Castle, PA; son-in-law, Dennis Stigge, Washington; brother, Lavern (Karan) Kruse, Walled Lake, MI; sisters, Elaine Scheele, Bremen, Jeanette (Robert) Scheele, Hanover; ten grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
