Joseph "Joey" Bernard Poell, 67, of Hanover, KS, died Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Bryan West Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, NE. Visitation was Friday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hanover Mortuary. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m., Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Hanover. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 28 at St. John's Catholic Church. Father Joseph Kieffer officiated.  Organist was  Janet Fritschi and the hymns were “Blest Are They,” “Because the Lord is My Shepherd,” “Prayer of St. Francis,” “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman,” “Ave Maria” and “City of God.” The pallbearers were be Darrell Schlabach, Danny Wieden, Mark Johnson, Tim Gastmann, Jim Cole and Kelly Stohs. The honorary pallbearers were Nicholas Poell, Michael Draemel and Cliff Dipman. Burial was in the St. John’s Catholic cemetery. Joe was born August 21, 1952 at Hanover, KS. to Joseph and Alta (Mathewson) Poell. In 1970, he graduated from Hanover High School and then graduated from Kansas State University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He received a Master of Science degree in Education and Business from Indiana University in 1979. Joe was the Manager of the Indiana Memorial Union at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana from 1978-1979. Program Director of Villanova Union at Villanova University, Villanova, PA. from 1974-1977. Director, Student Center/Student Activities at Southwest State University Marshall, MN from 1979-1997 and Director of Life Science at Normandale Community College, Bloomington, MN from 1997 to retirement. Joe was awarded Phi Delta Kappa Education Honorary 1979; SSU Celebrate Southwest Award 1985; Outstanding Young Men of America 1985 and International Who’s Who of Professionals 1997. Professional Affiliations included: Association of College Unions, International (International and regional leadership positions and International conference planning committee); Phi Delta Kappa and National Association for Campus Activities. Joe enjoyed working, traveling, cultivating plants and flowers, committee member of the Normandale Japanese Garden in Bloomington, MN, volunteering at the church and spending quality time with family and friends who he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Alta. Survivors include his brother, Timothy (Linda) Poell, Manhattan, KS and sister Mary (Ian) Draemel, Salina, KS and a host of nieces and nephews, Nicholas Poell, Christina (Poell) Wisdom, Amanda (Poell) Marfield, Becky (Draemel) Sanders, Ann Draemel, Michael Draemel, Amy (Draemel)Weber, Elizabeth (Draemel) Johnston and Valerie Draemel. A memorial fund has been established to St. John's Catholic Church, St. John's Catholic School or the Normandale Japanese Garden. Contributions may be sent in care of Hanover Mortuary.
